Добросердечный мальчик по имени Стерлинг Норт (Sterling North) очень любит животных. Однажды в лесу он нашел детеныша енота и забрал его домой, дав ему имя Раскал (Rascal). Они стали неразлучными друзьями и жили счастливо. Однако без проблем не обошлось… Позже Стерлинг осознал, что людям и диким животным непросто жить вместе: раз попробовав сладкую кукурузу, енот начал совершать ночные набеги на соседские огороды. Вдобавок, вскоре на семью обрушивается несчастье: проливные дожди полностью уничтожают их ранчо, а еще через какое-то время Стерлингу приходится уехать на учебу в Милуоки. Он решает вернуть Раскала в его родной дом — лес. Он идет к озеру и отпускает енота, а на следующий день в одиночестве отправляется в Милуоки.
